In Against The Tide, Martha Karua shares her bold, principled journey through law, politics, and public service in Kenya.
Martha Karua Launches Memoir Against The Tide
Martha Wangari Karua, one of Kenya’s most respected leaders, launched her memoir Against The Tide on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
The book—nine years in the making—tells the personal and political story of a woman who rose from rural Kirinyaga to become a symbol of justice, resilience, and fearless leadership.

A Life Dedicated to Justice
During the launch, Karua said:
“Writing this book has been a labour of love; the love I have for my country and its people, the struggles I have endured, and the unwavering commitment to building a better Kenya.”
Roots in Kimunye: A Curious Mind Awakens
Karua grew up in Kimunye village, where her deep curiosity sometimes got her in trouble. But her parents—both teachers—nurtured her inquisitive spirit.
A pivotal moment came when she visited a court with her father:
“I liked the attention the magistrate was getting… they were called ‘Judge’ even in the village. That’s when my interest in law began.”
At Nairobi Girls’ School, she found her voice. Encouraged to express her views, she began to shape the leadership style that would define her career.
From Legal Activism to Politics
Karua’s activism began at the Law Society of Kenya, where she fought back against government excesses.
“It’s not enough to complain. You must also step up and be part of the solution.”
That belief led her into politics in 1992, when she was elected MP for Gichugu. She went on to serve four consecutive terms, earning the nickname “The Iron Lady” for her firm stance on the rule of law and women’s rights.

A Trailblazing Legal Career
Karua earned her law degree from the University of Nairobi in 1980 and joined the bar in 1982.
At just 24, she began working as a magistrate but soon moved into private practice due to low pay. She founded Martha Karua & Co. Advocates in 1987 and focused on human rights during the repressive Moi regime.
“When I entered the judiciary, I was earning Sh3,000. It wasn’t enough to support a family.”
In 2020, she was named Senior Counsel, marking nearly four decades of service in law and governance.

The 2007 Crisis: Controversy and Conviction
Karua recounts the chaotic aftermath of the 2007 elections, where she played a key role in ensuring President Mwai Kibaki was sworn in despite widespread allegations of electoral fraud.
“The swearing-in had to be done immediately… I did what was right and I stand by it.”
She acknowledges the tragedy that followed:
“We regret the loss of life, the destruction of property… and our failure as leaders.”

Political Setbacks and Reflection
Karua also opens up about her 2012 presidential bid, calling it a miscalculation.
“I had bitten more than I could chew. If I had gone for MP or a local seat, I would have won.”
She also reflects on her role during Kenya’s constitutional review, where she clashed with Raila Odinga’s team over how to embed the power-sharing agreement into law.
“Kibaki wanted flexibility in appointments. Raila’s team wanted guarantees in the Constitution.”
Resilience Through the Years
Karua’s memoir is more than a political account—it’s a story of endurance, integrity, and purpose.
“It has not been easy. I have faced each tide that came my way and overcome.”
From courtrooms to Cabinet meetings, her story is one of standing firm even when it’s unpopular.
Against The Tide: A Message of Courage
The memoir is a call to speak truth to power. It’s also a deeply personal look at the toll of public service.
“Against The Tide is about resilience. It’s about facing adversity—and pushing forward anyway.”
Whether you’re a student of law, a political enthusiast, or simply curious about Kenya’s democratic history, Against The Tide offers a front-row seat to one woman’s fearless journey.
