Vasundhara Oswal, the 26-year-old daughter of Swiss-Indian industrialist Pankaj Oswal, has been arrested in Uganda on charges of kidnapping and murder. The case centers on the death of Mukesh Menaria, a long-time employee of the Oswal family, and has quickly escalated into an international legal and diplomatic dispute.
At the Heart: A $150M Ethanol Empire
The Oswal family operates East Africa’s largest ethanol plant in Uganda, a $150 million facility known for producing extra-neutral alcohol (ENA). The plant supplies the beverage, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries and is praised for its eco-friendly design, including zero liquid discharge systems.
The ethanol plant is part of Pankaj Oswal’s broader global investment strategy, which spans petrochemicals, agriculture, real estate, and renewable energy in India, Australia, and Africa.
Murder Charge and UN Appeal
In October 2024, Vasundhara was arrested following allegations that she was involved in Menaria’s death. While Menaria had earlier accused the Oswals of harassment, he later testified under oath that they had not harmed him. Despite this, Ugandan authorities brought kidnapping and murder charges against her.
The Oswal family claims the charges are fabricated and part of a conspiracy by business rivals working with corrupt officials in Uganda. They have since appealed to the United Nations for intervention, calling the arrest politically motivated.
“These claims are baseless. We believe this is a coordinated attack on our family’s reputation and business interests,” the Oswals said in a public statement.
A Legacy Under Threat
Before her arrest, Vasundhara was a leading figure in the family’s sustainability efforts. She managed the ethanol operations and championed community development and mental health advocacy in Uganda. Her arrest now casts a shadow over the Oswal Group’s image, which had been associated with responsible industrial development.
Business Meets Politics
The high-profile case highlights growing tensions between foreign investors and political forces in East Africa. Legal experts and analysts say the arrest exposes the risks of doing business in politically volatile environments.
“This case is a warning sign to global investors operating in jurisdictions where politics may influence justice,” said a regional legal analyst based in Nairobi.
