Ichung’wah Faces Backlash Over Gachagua Ouster

Andrew Ichung’wah’s role in Gachagua’s impeachment sparks fury in Mt. Kenya, risking his grassroots support and political future.

Ichung’wah at Crossroads as Gachagua Impeachment Backfires

By Charles Wachira

Andrew Kimani Ichung’wah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kikuyu, has long been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics and a key ally of President William Ruto.

However, his recent actions—particularly in spearheading the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—have ignited political tensions within his Mt. Kenya stronghold.

Rift in the Region

Ichung’wah’s rapid rise to Majority Leader in the National Assembly was built on his fierce loyalty to President William Ruto. But his role in the move against Gachagua—a grassroots heavyweight in Mt. Kenya—is now seen by many as a betrayal.

Gachagua remains widely respected in the region for his direct communication style and defense of Mt. Kenya’s political interests. His grassroots appeal has made him a unifying figure, and any threat to his role is interpreted as an affront to the region’s political influence.

Divided Political Base

Locals and Mt. Kenya leaders are now questioning Ichung’wah’s loyalty to the region. While his closeness to Ruto once solidified his influence, it now raises suspicions. Has he traded local concerns for national alliances?

“Ichung’wah is walking a tightrope,” one Nyeri politician told a local outlet. “He needs to remember who sent him to Parliament.”

A Politically Entangled Family

Despite the growing discontent, Ichung’wah’s family maintains strong ties to government. His sister-in-law serves as Kenya’s High Commissioner to South Africa, and his brother-in-law is the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Roads.

But even these connections may not be enough to insulate him from a rebellion at the grassroots. His perceived role in undermining Gachagua could overshadow his achievements and cost him dearly in the 2027 general elections.

Looking Ahead: Realignment or Isolation?

As Mt. Kenya leaders coalesce around Gachagua and reject what they term as “external interference”, Ichung’wah’s political future appears uncertain.

Whether he will realign with his constituents or double down on his Ruto alliance remains to be seen. For now, he stands at a critical political crossroads, where every step could either solidify or shatter his career.
