Mary Wamae Retires from Equity Group After 20 Years

Equity Group’s Mary Wamae retires after 20 years of legal, strategic, and regional leadership. Her legacy spans across East Africa.

On June 28, 2024, Equity Group Holdings Plc bid farewell to one of its most respected leaders, Mary Wangari Wamae, marking the end of her 20-year journey with the company. Her career has been defined by resilience, excellence, and transformative leadership in Kenya’s banking sector.

Humble Beginnings in Nyeri

Mary was born on July 7, 1968, and raised in Nyeri County by her mother, Cornelia Wanjiru, a small-scale farmer. Despite financial struggles, Mary excelled in her studies and remained determined to build a better life.

Academic and Legal Background

She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi and earned a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law, joining the Kenya Bar in 1991.

Mary later obtained two master’s degrees:

  • A Master of Arts in Gender and Development (University of Nairobi)
  • A Master’s in Leadership, Innovation, and Change from York St John University in the UK

From Legal Practice to Equity Bank

For 13 years, she ran her own firm, Mary Wangari & Company Advocates, gaining experience and recognition. In 2004, she joined Equity Building Society—now Equity Bank—as Head of Legal Services. She was later appointed Company Secretary, quickly rising through the ranks.

Leadership at the Top

Mary held several senior roles over the years. Her final position was Group Director of Strategy, Legal Services, and Company Secretary. In this role, she led:

  • Legal operations across the group
  • Strategic planning
  • Governance across subsidiaries in Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and DR Congo

Personal Life and Challenges

Mary married Patrick Wamae in 1992, and they had a church wedding in 2005. They separated in 2016 and divorced in 2018.

She also faced the loss of her mother, Cornelia, in 2017 due to illness. Despite personal hardships, she remained committed to her work at Equity.

A Powerful Legacy

Mary’s contributions shaped the growth and regional expansion of Equity Group Holdings Plc. She helped develop a strong legal foundation and guided the company through major transitions.

Her departure leaves big shoes to fill, but her legacy will continue to influence the bank’s future.

Conclusion

Mary Wangari Wamae’s story is one of determination, discipline, and integrity. As Equity moves forward, it does so on the strong foundation she helped build.
