KCB Gets €30M to Boost Women-Led Startups in Kenya

KCB secures €30 million from Gates Foundation & EIB to fund women entrepreneurs with loans, training, and mentorship across Kenya.

In a landmark move to empower women entrepreneurs, the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) received €30 million (approximately KSh 4.2 billion) in April 2024. The funding, from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the European Investment Bank (EIB), is set to accelerate growth for women-led businesses and startups across Kenya.

Supporting Women Entrepreneurs: The Inception

This targeted initiative seeks to bridge the long-standing financial gap faced by women in business, particularly in Kenya’s vibrant but capital-starved SME sector.

KCB CEO Paul Russo emphasized the bank’s dedication to financial inclusion:

“This partnership is more than just funding—it’s about giving women the tools they need to thrive. We’re committed to breaking down financial barriers and building sustainable business futures.”

Inside the €30 Million Fund

The grant comprises a combination of soft loans, credit guarantees, and direct grants. Loans will offer preferential interest rates and flexible repayment plans, designed to encourage women to formalize and expand their businesses.

EIB President Werner Hoyer lauded the partnership:

“Women-led businesses are essential to Kenya’s economic future. Through this fund, we aim to eliminate financial hurdles and invest in the country’s growth.”

How to Access the Funds

Women entrepreneurs can apply via KCB’s Women Banking Portal or visit any KCB branch nationwide.
Applicants will need:

  • A viable business plan or scale-up strategy
  • Proof of registration (for existing businesses)
  • Valid identification and verification documents
  • Basic financial literacy or business understanding

KCB will also offer nationwide workshops, mentorship, and financial literacy seminars to support applicants.

Dr. Ann Mutahi, KCB’s Director of Women Banking, stated:

“Whether you’re a startup or a seasoned businesswoman, our goal is to offer the financial and advisory tools to help you grow and create jobs.”

Disbursement and Tiers

Funds will be released in phases, with startups eligible for up to KSh 10 million, and more established enterprises able to access up to KSh 50 million based on growth potential.

A portion of the fund is dedicated to startup incubators providing mentorship, networking, and product development support for young female entrepreneurs.

The Gates Foundation affirmed in a statement:

“This initiative will transform lives, strengthen Kenya’s economy, and position women entrepreneurs for success in global markets.”

Breaking Barriers: Women in Business

Despite progress, women in Kenya still face an annual KSh 80 billion financing gap, according to the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Their businesses are often perceived as high-risk, facing more stringent loan requirements than male-owned ventures.

KCB’s collaboration with the EIB and Gates Foundation is intended to reverse this narrative—empowering women to become economic powerhouses.

Stories of Impact

Mary Wambui, who owns an agro-processing startup, was among the early beneficiaries:

“This funding allowed me to scale operations and hire new staff. KCB gave me the boost I needed.”

Grace Njeri, owner of a clothing brand, echoed that sentiment:

“This program gave me renewed confidence—not just from the funding but also from the training and support.”

Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

This initiative highlights the value of financial literacy, mentorship, and access to capital. Preparedness is key—entrepreneurs must demonstrate sound planning and growth strategies.

Paul Russo concluded:

“This fund is about more than numbers. It’s about changing lives and ensuring women take their rightful place in Kenya’s economic future.”

Conclusion

The €30 million fund from the Gates Foundation and the European Investment Bank, disbursed through KCB, is a powerful tool for driving inclusive economic growth in Kenya. By removing financial barriers, supporting startups, and building entrepreneurial skills, this initiative is paving the way for thousands of women to participate meaningfully in Kenya’s business landscape.
