Ethiopia shelves EAC membership plans, focusing instead on launching the AfCFTA to strengthen continental trade ties. Officials warn that premature entry into the EAC could harm the nation’s economy.

Ethiopia postpones East African Community entry, citing unreadiness. Focus shifts to launching AfCFTA ahead of the Ethiopian New Year.

Addis Ababa, July 2025 — Ethiopia’s Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration has determined that fast-tracking entry into the East African Community (EAC) would be infeasible and risky, opting to concentrate on launching the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) instead.

Samuel Gizaw, coordinator for AfCFTA implementation, emphasized that Ethiopia lacks the necessary groundwork — including studies on customs alignment, labor movement, and revenue-sharing — to meet the EAC’s integrated customs-union standards.

“Ethiopia has neither conducted the necessary research nor undertaken the required preparations… EAC members already have duty-free movement of goods and people and a customs union,” Gizaw told local media.

With an annual trade volume of about $17 billion, adjustments needed for EAC membership — including policy harmonization and potential revenue redistribution — could negatively impact the economy in the short term.

“Joining the EAC now could harm Ethiopia’s economy,” Gizaw warned, stressing the need for extensive analysis and strategic preparation.

Instead, the ministry is working to launch the AfCFTA framework before the Ethiopian New Year, aiming to integrate into Africa’s largest trading bloc by outreach, ahead of any regional bid.
