Kenyan national Elisha Odhiambo Asumo faces U.S. charges for allegedly aiding Mexico’s Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel, exposing deep global crime networks.

Kenyan national Elisha Asumo faces life in the U.S. for aiding Mexico’s CJNG cartel. DEA ties CJNG to Kenya’s first major meth lab in Namanga.

Kenyan national Elisha Odhiambo Asumo has been named by U.S. prosecutors in a transnational criminal case involving Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Asumo played a key role in facilitating arms deals for the cartel. He now faces a possible life sentence in the United States.

The case reveals how criminal networks are extending their reach across continents—and how Kenya is becoming a new front in that expansion.

Meth Lab Uncovered at Kenya–Tanzania Border

In 2024, Kenyan authorities, working with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), raided a hidden methamphetamine lab in Namanga, near the Kenya-Tanzania border. This marked the first confirmed large-scale operation by the CJNG in Kenya.

The lab was disguised as a poultry farm, surrounded by barbed wire and iron-sheet buildings. Inside, officers found chemicals and equipment used for meth production.

Multi-National Arrests in the Raid

During the raid, several suspects were arrested:

  • Israel Alvarado Vera, a Mexican national
  • Egwu Ogba Mba and Ojukwu Awu (alias “Pastor”), both from Nigeria
  • Betty Mukami Micheni, a Kenyan citizen

This operation showed how international drug cartels are using East Africa as a base for producing and distributing narcotics—especially to markets in Europe and Asia.

U.S. Report Highlights Kenya’s Drug Trafficking Risk

The U.S. State Department acknowledged the raid in its 2024 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report:

“A major accomplishment in 2024 was the multiagency seizure of a large-scale methamphetamine production lab in Namanga, Kenya. The lab was linked to the Mexican Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG)…”

This discovery confirmed that Mexican cartels are no longer limiting their reach to the Americas.

Asumo’s Role in the Global Crime Network

Elisha Asumo is accused of facilitating arms shipments that were critical to the CJNG’s operations. His involvement highlights how local individuals can become deeply entangled in global crime networks.

His case, now in a U.S. federal court, could provide insight into how Mexican cartels are funding, staffing, and expanding operations in East Africa.

Africa: The CJNG’s New Frontier

CJNG’s presence in Kenya represents a new chapter in organized crime. Experts warn that porous borders, weak customs enforcement, and limited regional coordination make East Africa an attractive base for smuggling drugs and weapons.

This trend signals a growing need for cross-border cooperation between African governments and international law enforcement agencies.

What’s Next?

Asumo’s trial is ongoing. It is expected to reveal further details about the CJNG’s expansion into Africa, and the growing role of East African nations in global drug and weapons trafficking.

His prosecution will test how well law enforcement can respond to complex, international criminal operations involving actors across three continents.
