Gavin Gao (Huawei Kenya CEO), Prof. Elijah Omwenga (Vice Chancellor, Open University of Kenya), and Dr. James Mwangi (Equity Group CEO & OUK Chancellor) announce a landmark partnership to launch the university's ICT Academy.

Huawei and Equity Group launch ICT Academy at Konza City’s Open University of Kenya to train 10,000 youth in AI, cybersecurity, and software development.

KONZA CITY, Kenya — April 2025
In a landmark step toward closing Africa’s digital skills gap, Huawei Kenya and the Equity Group Foundation have launched the Huawei ICT Academy at the Open University of Kenya (OUK), based in the futuristic Konza Technopolis.

The academy will train over 10,000 learners in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, cybersecurity, and software development, preparing them for the rapidly evolving digital economy.

“Digital skills are no longer optional—they are foundational,” said Fiona Pan, Deputy CEO of Public Affairs at Huawei Kenya.

Bridging Kenya’s Digital Divide

The academy is designed to develop job-ready talent, especially among youth from marginalized communities. It combines self-paced online learning with practical training in a Virtual Innovation Hub, allowing students to solve real-world challenges in agriculture, healthcare, education, and fintech.

The initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the Digital Superhighway Strategy, both aimed at boosting Kenya’s digital infrastructure and economic inclusion.

“For a long time, Kenya’s youth lacked tools to compete globally,” said Dr. James Mwangi, Executive Chairman of the Equity Group Foundation.
“This academy offers knowledge and a platform to lead change.”

A Unique Public-Private Model

While Huawei has set up ICT academies in South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria, the Kenyan version is distinctive. It integrates government support, private-sector investment, and university-led academic rigor.

Graduates will receive dual certification:

  • A degree accredited by OUK
  • A professional certification recognized globally by Huawei

This dual-approach significantly improves employability both regionally and internationally.

“The global digital economy is projected to grow by over $3 trillion in five years,” added Fiona Pan.
“Africa must not be left behind.”

Boosting Kenya’s Tech Workforce

The new academy addresses a critical gap: universities often lack industry-aligned curricula, leaving graduates underprepared for the workforce. The Huawei-Equity-OUK collaboration aims to correct this by embedding practical skills and certification into formal education.

“This isn’t just about issuing certificates or teaching code,” said a senior program officer at OUK.
“It’s about building a new African economy driven by innovation, not resources.”

Strategic Expansion for Huawei and Equity

For Huawei, the academy deepens its stake in Africa’s digital infrastructure while enhancing its brand credibility amid global scrutiny. For Equity Group Foundation, the project extends its role from financier to enabler of social impact and digital opportunity.

“We are no longer just financiers; we are enablers of opportunity,” said Mwangi at the launch ceremony.

Why It Matters Across Africa

The initiative sets a blueprint for how African countries can drive digital transformation through multi-sectoral collaboration. The academy’s scalable model could soon be replicated in other regions across the continent.

Kenya, long regarded as East Africa’s tech capital, risks losing ground due to underfunded institutions and a shortage of digital talent. This academy provides a timely, high-impact solution.

With 10,000 learners expected in the first phase—and many more in the future—the Huawei ICT Academy could redefine Africa’s innovation economy.
