A December 2024 government directive transferred eight more SOEs to EIH, streamlining asset management and centralizing Ethiopia’s investment planning.

Ethiopian Investment Holdings becomes Africa’s largest sovereign wealth fund at $45B, marking Ethiopia’s rise as a regional investment and economic leader.

In a landmark development for African finance, Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) has been ranked as Africa’s largest sovereign wealth fund, managing assets totaling $45 billion. The Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute (SWFI) confirmed this ranking, placing EIH 34th globally, ahead of many established funds worldwide.

A Strategic Rise: From Newcomer to Powerhouse

Founded in 2021 with an initial capital of 100 billion Ethiopian birr, EIH started with 28 state-owned enterprises (SOEs) under its wing. Today, it manages over 40 SOEs spanning:

This expansion reflects Ethiopia’s economic modernization and commitment to building state-owned capital efficiently.

“EIH exemplifies how a focused, state-led asset consolidation strategy can drive robust growth,”
said Levine K. Njau, CEO of Delcare Properties International.

In December 2024, EIH further strengthened its portfolio by absorbing eight more SOEs from the Public Enterprise Holdings and Administration (PEHA).

Cementing Ethiopia’s Regional Leadership

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide emphasized:

“The recognition of EIH underscores Ethiopia’s emergence as a global investment hub committed to sustainable development.”

This progress is aligned with Vision 2040—Ethiopia’s long-term transformation plan focused on:

  • Infrastructure development
  • Industrialization
  • Green energy
  • Digital connectivity

Economic Diversification in Action

EIH’s centralized model complements Ethiopia’s shift from agriculture to manufacturing and services.

By placing SOEs under a unified wealth fund, the government is better positioned to:

“Our sovereign wealth fund is a tool for industrial progress and global investor confidence,” said an EIH spokesperson.

Governance, Debt, and the Road Ahead

While the progress is historic, Ethiopia must manage sovereign debt, enhance governance, and ensure equity-driven development.

“Consolidation under EIH is bold—but its success hinges on transparency and inclusion,”
Njau added.

For EIH to deliver sustained returns, Ethiopia must embrace:

A Model for Africa’s Economic Future

EIH’s rise to a $45 billion fund isn’t just a national success—it’s a potential model for other African nations seeking state-led investment transformation.

As the continent embraces industrialization and digital growth, Ethiopia is establishing itself as:

  • A regional investment magnet
  • A leader in sovereign asset management
  • A driver of pan-African economic renewal
