John Mukunji: Kenya’s Young Tech MP Changing the Game

In the lush highlands of Embu County, a quiet revolution is underway. Hon. John Gitonga Mukunji, 35, the youthful Member of Parliament for Manyatta Constituency, is turning heads with his blend of entrepreneurship, youth activism, and digital innovation.

From Campus Hustle to Energy Entrepreneur

While a student at the University of Nairobi, Mukunji faced rejection when denied an internship. But instead of giving up, he took a bold step—using his HELB loan to launch a startup: Environmental Recycling Services (ERS).

“I was very angry and wondered what would happen when I finished university,” he told Citizen Digital. “That’s when I decided not to look for another job.”

By 2021, ERS had grown to over 60 employees, securing contracts in Kenya’s renewable energy sector.

Youth Empowerment Through Tech and Sports

Elected in 2022 on a UDA party ticket, Mukunji has kept his promise to prioritize youth economic inclusion. In February 2025, he launched Embu’s first ICT Hub under the Jitume Programme, giving local youth access to laptops, coding skills, and job platforms.

“Our youth need more than promises. They need tools, skills, and jobs,” he said at the launch event.

Other initiatives include:

  • Modernized classrooms in rural schools
  • Community internet hotspots for digital freelancers
  • The Embu FKF Football League, which he co-founded to nurture local sports talent

Defying the Party Line: Finance Bill Vote

In a bold move during the 2024 Finance Bill crisis, Mukunji broke ranks with ruling party MPs by voting NO—citing overwhelming public opposition.

“It is my duty to convey the public’s disapproval to the President and Deputy President,” he said on June 25, 2024, during the televised roll call.

He has since drafted a constitutional amendment proposal that would mandate referendums for impeaching key state officials, ensuring decisions reflect public will.

Pro-Business, Progressive—and Bold on Big Tech

Mukunji is championing what he calls progressive capitalismpro-business but people-first. He has demanded that foreign tech firms like Starlink and Google open local offices in Kenya, hire Kenyan developers, and pay fair taxes.

His Mukunji Foundation has launched:

  • Free health clinics in rural areas
  • Secondary school scholarships for vulnerable youth
  • Mentorship camps for young entrepreneurs

A review of his parliamentary votes shows consistent backing for:

  • Education reform bills
  • Fair tax policies for MSMEs
  • Increased youth budget allocations
  • Rural infrastructure and broadband expansion

“I want to be remembered as a servant leader who listens and responds,” he regularly tells town hall meetings.

Net Worth, Influence, and Political Future

Mukunji is currently estimated to be worth between KSh300–500 million, with:

  • A majority stake in ERS
  • Residential and commercial real estate in Nairobi and Embu
  • Venture capital investments in agritech and ICT startups

A senior county official described him as:

“Young—but he thinks like an old hand in both business and governance.”

His growing popularity with boda boda riders, digital freelancers, and urban youth hints at a possible Cabinet appointment or 2027 gubernatorial run.

“Politics is not just about power—it’s about purpose,” he said in April 2025.
