Aliko Dangote-backed Africa Travel Investments acquires Kenya’s iconic Pollman’s Tours in a $30M deal, signaling rising investor confidence in East Africa’s tourism sector.

Africa Travel Investments, backed by Dangote, acquires Kenya’s Pollman’s Tours for $30M in a strategic tourism industry expansion.

In a bold move highlighting investor confidence in African tourism, Africa Travel Investments (ATI), backed by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, has acquired Pollman’s Tours and Safaris, Kenya’s oldest and most iconic tour operator, in a KSh4 billion ($30 million) deal.

The deal was approved by the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK), which cleared ATI’s 100% acquisition of Pollman’s issued share capital. The watchdog said there were no risks to market dominance or employment.

“Post-merger, the market share of the merged entity will not change, as the target and the acquirer are not in similar businesses,” CAK noted in its March 2025 approval.

This transaction follows a February 2025 investment by Alterra Capital Partners into ARP Africa Travel Group, which owns both Pollman’s and Southern Cross Safaris, a leader in luxury safari tours.

Why the Deal Matters

While Dangote is widely known for his industrial investments, such as Dangote Cement and the Dangote Refinery, including a $ 2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Ethiopia

This Ethiopian deal marks a strategic diversification into Africa’s $300 billion tourism economy.

Kenya, dubbed the “Safari Capital of the World,” is at the epicenter. According to the Kenya Tourism Board, international arrivals hit 1.75 million in 2023, generating KSh352.5 billion ($2.5 billion). Tourism now supports over 1.6 million jobs, contributing more than 10% to GDP.

Pollman’s Legacy

Established in 1950, Pollman’s is a pioneer in post-independence luxury travel in Kenya, with deep ties to international travel agencies, cruise liners, and luxury lodges. Its acquisition offers ATI access to a premium tourism brand with decades of market dominance.

The Bigger Strategy: A Pan-African Tourism Giant

This isn’t a one-off investment. ATI and Alterra are pursuing a broader strategy to create a vertically integrated tourism platform across Africa. Their targets include high-value assets in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Africa, with the goal of capitalizing on the rising demand for premium travel experiences.

“Africa’s tourism potential remains vastly underexploited,” said an Alterra spokesperson. “This deal reflects confidence in Kenya’s resilience and global appeal.”

A Soft-Power Pivot for Dangote

The move represents a departure from Dangote’s typical “hard infrastructure” bets into “soft power” areas like conservation, sustainability, and cultural diplomacy. It aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 blueprint, which identifies tourism as a critical economic pillar.

The government plans to increase international arrivals to 5 million annually by 2030. It is also investing in airports, high-end ecotourism, and digital campaigns to position Kenya globally.

Market Impact: Consolidation and Higher Standards

Kenya’s tour operator market remains fragmented. While mid-market players like Bonfire Adventures and Bountiful Safaris dominate domestic travel, Pollman’s targets the upper market. Analysts believe ATI’s deep capital base could usher in market consolidation and improved quality standards.

What Next?

With regulatory hurdles cleared, the focus now shifts to integration and regional growth. Sources close to ATI indicate that expansion into Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Africa is already underway.

As Kenya’s leisure economy regains momentum post-COVID, Dangote’s bold entry could prove to be not just lucrative, but also transformative for the continent’s perception as a world-class tourist destination.
