The ceremony, held at CUK’s main campus in Karen, was officiated by President William Ruto and attended by top government officials, university council members, and international development partners.
Before assuming his new role, Dr Chitunga held a senior position at the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) in Abidjan, where he helped establish a US$5 billion Affirmative Finance Special and Trust Fund. His expertise in development finance, partnerships, and donor coordination aligns with CUK’s vision for academic and economic expansion mmust.ac.ke+3cuk.ac.ke+3thestar.co.ke+3.
During his inaugural address, Dr Chitunga unveiled the Chancellor’s Legacy Program, which includes:
A Multi-Donor Cooperative Innovation & Entrepreneurship Fund
Annual Co-operative Investment Forum
A Green Infrastructure & AI Innovation Centre
The Africa Horticulture Research Hub
These initiatives support CUK’s mission to modernize education, support cooperative-driven economic growth, and attract international academic partnerships.
Chitunga succeeds the late Hon. Joseph Nyagah, CUK’s inaugural chancellor until his death in 2020. The ceremony included handing over the traditional Mace, university Charter, Universities Act, and the institution’s Strategic Plan 2022–2027, symbolizing the official transfer of authority facebook.com+13cuk.ac.ke+13cuk.ac.ke+13.
President Ruto emphasized that Dr Chitunga’s appointment represents Kenya’s belief in youth-led transformation, noting that institutions like CUK must help Kenyans move beyond “learning how to bake the cake” to actually producing it.
The installation of Dr Bernard Chitunga marks an historic generational shift in Kenya’s education landscape. His global vision, strong local roots, and commitment to cooperative, technology-driven learning align with CUK’s goal of becoming a continental centre of academic excellence.
Chitunga’s leadership signals that Kenya is ready to entrust its future to youthful, innovative changemakers—a message powerful enough to transcend campus walls and shape the nation’s development for decades ahead.
