Agronomist Fred Munene is transforming Kenyan farming using data, drones, and digital tools—earning Ksh400K monthly and training 300+ farmers.

Fred Munene: Leading Kenya’s Agritech Revolution

At just 32, Fred Munene, an agronomist from Meru County, is fast becoming one of Kenya’s most influential agritech entrepreneurs. Through his venture, Farm with Fred, Munene earns up to Ksh400,000 ($3,000) monthly, thanks to a model that blends precision farming, digital tools, and smallholder outreach.

“I realized early that our farmers were investing a lot but harvesting too little. The difference was data,” he said in a recent interview.

Precision Agriculture Meets Kenyan Soil

Once seen as a preserve of wealthy Western farms, precision agriculture is now taking root in Kenya—thanks to innovators like Munene. His approach starts with soil testing, followed by drone surveillance, satellite data analysis, and personalized agronomy support.

“We begin with soil testing to determine nutrient gaps, then match the right fertilizer and crop variety,” he explained.

His data-driven system helps farmers:

  • Cut input costs by up to 30%
  • Increase yields by as much as 60%, especially for tomatoes, capsicum, and onions.

Farm with Fred: Digital + Demonstration

Established in 2021, Farm with Fred serves as both a demonstration farm and consultancy located near Meru town. Munene leases about five acres, where he grows high-value crops using:

  • Drip irrigation
  • Fertigation units
  • Greenhouse systems

With a lean team of five agronomists and farmhands, Munene also supports over 300 smallholder farmers across Meru, Embu, and Kirinyaga counties.

Reaching Farmers Digitally

Munene’s influence extends far beyond the field. Through platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, he delivers weekly videos on:

  • Seed selection
  • Budgeting for farming
  • Pest and disease control

“Young people want to farm. What they lack is practical guidance,” Munene says.

Some tutorials have drawn over 100,000 views, attracting sponsorship from agri-input brands and tech startups.

Riding Kenya’s Agritech Momentum

Kenya’s agritech ecosystem is thriving. A 2023 Disrupt Africa report shows over 60 active agritech startups in the country, offering services from crop insurance to mobile credit.

The government is also driving change. Under the Agricultural Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS) 2019–2029, at least 1 million farms are expected to be digitized by 2029.

“What we’re doing at a micro level is scalable with the right partnerships,” Munene says.

Next Steps: Scaling Up Farm with Fred

Munene’s next move? Transforming his venture into a training and innovation center. Plans include:

  • Acquiring 10 acres of land
  • Installing advanced irrigation systems
  • Launching a certification program for agronomy students

He’s also seeking partnerships with county governments and NGOs to scale the model to arid regions like Isiolo and Turkana.
