Bobi Wine confirms 2026 presidential run against Museveni, defying threats and calling for global action amid Uganda’s deepening repression.

Bobi Wine, Uganda’s opposition leader, has announced he will challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 general elections, setting up another showdown against East Africa’s longest-serving head of state.
Speaking to The Guardian, Wine said the decision was not about personal ambition but a duty to Uganda’s youth, who make up over 80% of the population.
“We cannot just give the election to General Museveni. I think I stir a lot of hope because I don’t shut my big mouth—and that’s a big challenge to the regime.”
⚠️ Arrests, Torture, and Escalating Threats
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has faced repeated arrests and beatings. His chief adversary is Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son and current Chief of Defence Forces, who has threatened Wine publicly.
In March 2025, a National Unity Platform (NUP) MP died following alleged torture by security forces. Wine revealed journalists were also beaten and U.S. observers were expelled from the by-election scene.
“Thinking about how brutal it’s going to be… it’s terrifying,” he admitted.
👨🏿🎓 Uganda’s Youth and the Power of the Vote
Uganda’s youthful population is Wine’s biggest strength. He views the under-35 majority as a rising democratic force.
“Young people are hopeful because they see the possibility. If you’re not given freedom, you don’t have a life.”
His NUP party, launched in 2020, continues to draw large crowds and online traction, making it the strongest challenger to Museveni’s nearly 40-year rule.
🧭 Targeted Sanctions & A Call for Global Action
Wine criticized the international community’s silence, calling for targeted sanctions on regime officials and a rethink of military aid.
“The guns that kill our people are American. The soldiers torturing us are trained in America.”
He warned that business interests are being prioritized over human rights:
“We want the world to help us—not become partners in crime.”
💸 $2.5 Billion Lost Yearly to Corruption
According to Wine, Uganda loses UGX 10 trillion ($2.5 billion) every year to corruption, citing Inspector General of Government (IGG) reports.
“Our national debt will take 97 years to repay. Yet we’re rich in natural resources and youth. If corruption stops, we can thrive.”

“Those who fight for freedom don’t choose it—it chooses them,” Wine said. “If I’m still alive and not in jail by the end of this year, I’ll run.”
🗳️ 2026: Museveni’s Seventh Term?
President Museveni, now in his 80s, has confirmed plans to seek a seventh term. The 2021 elections were criticized for:
- Widespread violence and internet shutdowns
- Crackdowns on opposition rallies
- Accusations of fraud and rigging
The U.S. State Department called the 2021 election “fundamentally flawed”, while Africa Elections Watch documented serious irregularities.
