Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of Africa’s first Airbus A350-1000, marking a key milestone in the continent’s aviation industry. The handover took place on November 6, 2024, at Airbus’s facility in Toulouse, France.

This is the first of four A350-1000s Ethiopian will operate, bolstering its fleet of 21 existing A350 aircraft and positioning the airline to enhance service on popular long-haul routes like Washington D.C., London, Paris, and Frankfurt.

“We are proud to be the first African airline to operate the A350-1000,” said CEO Mesfin Tasew. “This step strengthens our global reach and our commitment to top-tier passenger experience.”

Enhanced Comfort and Connectivity

The A350-1000, seating 395 passengers, introduces Ethiopian Airlines’ largest business-class cabin and improved passenger comfort with Airbus’s Airspace cabin.

Key features include:

  • HBCplus satellite connectivity for high-speed internet, a first for the airline
  • Reduced cabin noise by 50%
  • Mood lighting and enhanced air circulation
  • Wider seats and more personal space

“Our passengers will enjoy the quietest and most comfortable flights in the skies today,” said Tasew.

Efficiency and Sustainability

The A350-1000 is among the most fuel-efficient wide-body aircraft in its class. It is designed to operate on up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and is expected to be compatible with 100% SAF by 2030, aligning with global net-zero emissions goals.

“The A350-1000 supports our strategy for a greener future,” said COO Esayas Woldemariam. “It reduces our carbon footprint while enhancing service quality.”

Streamlined Integration with Existing Fleet

The A350-1000 shares a platform with the airline’s A350-900 jets, enabling common training, maintenance, and scheduling — cutting operational costs and improving efficiency.

“The commonality allows flexibility in fleet deployment and optimises long-haul performance,” noted Tasew.

Strengthening African Aviation

With over 130 international destinations, Ethiopian Airlines is Africa’s largest airline by fleet and revenue. This new addition to its fleet enhances its capacity to connect Africa to the world.

“This aircraft helps us bridge Africa with the global economy, building a world-class African airline brand,” Tasew said.

Looking Ahead

Ethiopian Airlines plans to receive 14 more A350s (11 A350-900s and 3 A350-1000s), continuing its fleet modernisation and environmental leadership in aviation.

With its growing fleet and strategic investments in technology and sustainability, Ethiopian Airlines is charting a bold future — one that promises excellence in service, connectivity, and climate responsibility.
