Gachagua: Power, Scandal, and Political Downfall

From student activist to impeached Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua’s journey reflects ambition, controversy, and deep political rifts.
Born on February 28, 1965, in Mathira, deep in the heart of Kenya’s Mount Kenya region, Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua rose from humble roots to become Deputy President—only to suffer a dramatic political fall marked by scandal, power struggles, and impeachment.
He often invoked his family’s role in the Mau Mau rebellion to bolster his image as a patriot. But over time, his story shifted from one of liberation to one of accusations, controversy, and recrimination.
Gachagua’s academic journey began at Kabiruini Primary School, followed by Kianyaga High School. In 1985, he joined the University of Nairobi, graduating in 1988 with a degree in Political Science and Literature. There, he became an outspoken student leader.
After graduation, Gachagua underwent paramilitary training and was appointed a District Officer (DO) under the repressive Moi regime. It was during this period that rumors surfaced alleging he acted as an informant for the feared Special Branch, betraying fellow activists.
Gachagua entered national politics in 2017, winning the Mathira parliamentary seat under the Jubilee Party, thanks to the powerful backing of Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto.
But after the Uhuru-Ruto fallout, he chose to align with Ruto—becoming one of his fiercest defenders and a central Kenya power broker. In return, Gachagua faced a barrage of arrests, investigations, and high-profile raids by the Kenyatta government.
He claimed persecution, famously stating:
“They stripped me in front of my children to humiliate me. It was politics—pure and brutal.”
Gachagua’s political career has been overshadowed by accusations of corruption. In 2021, he was charged with acquiring KSh 7.3 billion (~$57 million) through suspicious government tenders and shell companies.
When Ruto became president and Gachagua his deputy in 2022, the case was suddenly dropped. The DPP cited insufficient evidence. But critics saw it as judicial capture and a reward for political loyalty.
New allegations followed: during his two years as DP, Gachagua allegedly amassed an extra KSh 5.2 billion (~$40 million), despite earning only KSh 13 million a year.
He dismissed the claims, saying:
“My family has businesses—real estate, hospitality, and construction. That’s where our wealth comes from.”
A damaging allegation emerged during his impeachment hearings. Senior Counsel James Orengo told the Senate that Gachagua flew to London in 2017, where his brother Nderitu Gachagua, the late Nyeri Governor, was terminally ill.
He allegedly coerced him into signing over his estate just days before his death—and began withdrawing money immediately.
Gachagua’s lawyer, Elisha Ongoya, denied the claims, calling them “baseless” and lacking credible evidence.
By early 2024, Gachagua had become politically isolated. He clashed with Ruto over economic policy, governance, and growing public discontent. Some within Ruto’s camp accused him of backing anti-tax protests that rocked Kenya in mid-2024.
Behind the scenes, Gachagua made discreet efforts to reconcile with Uhuru Kenyatta, sending emissaries to seek peace. But Uhuru reportedly declined, seeing the outreach as political opportunism.
In October 2024, the Senate impeached Gachagua, citing corruption, abuse of office, and misconduct. He became the first Deputy President removed under the 2010 Constitution.
From his Moi-era days as a powerful DO to his rise under Ruto and public war with Uhuru, Gachagua’s journey has been anything but ordinary.
