John Mbadi‘s takeover of Kenya’s Treasury comes at a critical time, marked by a blend of successes and lingering challenges from his predecessor, Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u.

During his two-year tenure, Ndung’u helped the country navigate global shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, maintaining a fragile sense of economic stability.

He also rolled out key fiscal consolidation strategies aimed at cutting the budget deficit and strengthening revenue collection via Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) reforms.

However, his time in office was marred by a rapid rise in public debt, which remains a heavy burden on the economy. Attempts to tame inflation were largely ineffective, with soaring prices diminishing household purchasing power.

Critics also point to sluggish implementation of some economic reforms, which diluted their intended impact.

Mbadi’s Immediate Challenges

Now at the helm, Mbadi faces the uphill task of restoring investor confidence, balancing debt levels, and enforcing credible fiscal reforms to ensure long-term growth.

While Mbadi boasts a strong record in parliamentary leadership, questions swirl over whether his appointment is grounded in merit or reflects political considerations under President William Ruto.

“Kenya’s Treasury demands technical expertise, not just political loyalty,” remarked a Nairobi-based economist.

What Lies Ahead

The coming months will be a litmus test for Mbadi’s capacity to steer fiscal discipline while navigating complex political dynamics. His success—or failure—will significantly shape Kenya’s financial trajectory ahead of the 2027 general elections.
