Lamu East MP Ruweida Obo has been expelled from the coastal political bloc Jumuiya ya Pwani following her controversial support for the Finance Bill 2024. Her vote has ignited fierce criticism among constituents and coastal political leaders.

The Controversial Vote

The Finance Bill 2024, which introduced new taxes and fiscal measures to bolster government revenues, has drawn sharp resistance from various regions—including the Coast. Despite calls to reject the bill, Ruweida voted in favor, citing national development priorities.

Expulsion from Jumuiya ya Pwani

Jumuiya ya Pwani, led by Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, convened an emergency meeting post-vote and unanimously expelled Ruweida.

“MP Ruweida’s vote is a direct betrayal to the people of Lamu East and the coastal community,” said Joho.
“We cannot support policies that worsen our region’s economic plight.”

The bloc had previously mobilized opposition to the bill, arguing it disproportionately burdens low-income households in areas like Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu.

Reactions and Implications

Public opinion remains split. Some hail the vote as a bold nationalistic stand, while others accuse Ruweida of turning her back on the community.

“She chose the state over the people,” said Ahmed Said, a Lamu East resident and community activist.

Political analysts suggest her expulsion may weaken her base ahead of the 2027 elections, given the bloc’s influence in shaping voter sentiment in Coastal Kenya.

MP Ruweida Defends Her Vote

Ruweida defended her stance, insisting the Finance Bill was necessary to secure funding for infrastructure, healthcare, and education:

“It was a difficult vote, but I stand by it. Sometimes leadership demands unpopular decisions for the good of the country.”

She has since pledged to continue engaging constituents, emphasizing dialogue and development as her priorities moving forward.

Broader Political Impact

The fallout reflects Kenya’s delicate balance between regional political alliances and national policymaking. It also underscores the high political cost of defying local party blocs in favor of national legislation.
